In March 1997 the airport’s name was changed to Bristol International Airport. (Bristol Lulsgate Airport.)
Passenger numbers passed through three million in 2002, largely due to the arrival of the low-cost carrier Go Fly. Continued expansion by easyJet led to another increase in passengers — to 3.8 million. In May 2005, Continental Airlines introduced a direct flight from Bristol to Newark with Boeing 757 aircraft.
The terminal building does not have jetways, so all aircraft park on the apron and passengers either walk out to their flights, or are carried by bus.
Bristol International Airport is located on the A38, 8 miles (13 km) south of Bristol city centre. The airport is signposted from the M5, from junction 22 when approaching from the south and junction 18 when approaching from the north. Neither gives quick access to the airport, a fact which is recognised by the Greater Bristol Strategic Transport Study. A number of solutions have been proposed, including a new link road between the A38 and the A371 but nothing has been approved.
The Bristol International Flyer bus service operates from Bristol calling at Bristol Temple Meads railway station, Bristol Bus station and Clifton. The service takes 30 minutes from the city centre and can be booked as part of a Rail journey changing between train and bus at Bristol Temple Meads. First Group operates an hourly bus service from Weston-super-Mare.
Local men who ran local businesses back in 1927 was opened as Bristol Airport. They started with a nominal amount of money wishing to open a flying club. They were successful.
Today the airport has changed from a local flying club to a RAF airport then to a passenger airport. One of the 9th largest airports in the UK is reported to be Bristol Airport.
Wales, Somerset, Devon and Avon area of the UK are generally the areas of the UK which passengers catch a flight from Bristol Airport to Europe and USA.
2007 was the year. The runways were resurfaced causing endless amount of havoc. Safety standards were breached and all the planes could not take off or land. This meant passengers travelling on Easy jet Bristol flights and XL Airways had to make alternative arrangements.
The M5 in England will lead you to Bristol Airport. 14 KM south of the city centre on the A38. Follow signs for Bristol Airport.
If you are not leaving your car at Bristol Airport parking. Travellers can catch an express bus from the city centre. Either the bus station or the railway station is where passengers can find the bus stop . There are frequent services between 0230 until 0045. Customers are always best to check the flyer bus service timetable as the journey times may change at short notice.
There are also local buses run by First Group which can pick up passengers from local bus stances making the bus more accessible to travellers . Before departing for the airport , please double check the bus time table as times may vary.
Bristol Airport is now offering a fleet of 7 seater taxis called checkercars which operate outside the main building 24 hours a day.
