Portalegre in Portugal is closer to the Spanish border in the eastern area. Surrounded by medieval walls and ruins most of the city’s beautiful building are now in disrepair and tourists pass quickly through the town to the beaches and beyond. Today Portalegre is still hive of activity due to its infamous woollen mills. The town has diversified and industries include cork making and woodworking.

There are various sites still worth a visit. The cathedral which has renaissance interiors still preserved. The Town Hall also known as “The Camara building” which was built in the 18 century. There is a walking tour of the town which starts at the Cathedral and finishes at Saint Bernardo Covenant. There are various paintings exhibited by local artists in the Municipal Museum. Other exhibits include glassware and religious life. Castelo de Vide is around 20 km drive from Portalegre, nestled in the hill tops. This town’s residents take great pride in preserving tradition values. Each house is covered in red flowers.
