Derry Airport was used as a military airport initially to help out during the second world war. Way back in the 1930s into 1940s the airport base was called Eglinton. When the war ended Eglinton was once again returned to civilian use. A flying school and club was introduced some 30 years after this ended. In the 1970s this was introduced and passengers still use today.

Fifteen years after Loganair had introduced their regular flights to the UK main land. The Derry City Council applied and received funding to upgrade Londonderry airport. The airport had a major overhaul , over the next five years ending in 1994, including the revamping of access roads, runway lighting and upgrading the runway itself. The pride of place was an up to date terminal with a fire station.

The name of the airport was changed to City of Derry Airport. Some passengers may refer to her as Londonderry Airport or Eglinton either name is suitable. Attracting new air lines to use Londonderry as a destination was the main aim of the airport. Since 1979 the airline Logan air has been using Derry Airport since this year to frequently fly to Glasgow. A daily route was established in 1989 by BA from Londonderry Airport. Various airlines have slowly introduced new routes over the past few years into Derry.

Today the terminal building has several places you can relax and unwind before you catch your flight. Coffee with a few snacks and a sandwich at the Cafe Espresso can be purchased by travellers . A continental pavement style cafe offers passengers a limited selection of drinks from its bar.

A relaxing drink can be purchased at the airport bar before catching your flight to your final destination. Passengers can purchase a pint of beer or Irish Guinness. You might prefer a glass of wine or bubbly or just a gin and tonic. You will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy your drink in the bar before making your way over to the boarding gate.

The airport restaurant which can be found in the departure lounge is often used by travellers wishing to arrive a little earlier than they need to. Meals can be purchased at most times of the day by passengers travelling at morning , noon or night time. Travellers can order a cooked meal to heat them up before their flight. If travellers prefer a smaller meal with perhaps sandwiches and snacks this can easily be arranged at the restaurant too.

A Bureau De Change service is offered inside Londonderry Airport Ireland, UK. If any business passengers are travelling from the airport they can make use of the business lounge set aside for them for all their business needs.
